James Holden will have to work hard to maintain control and avoid an all-out war between the Belters, Earth and Mars. With Fred out of the way and Marco claiming he just pulled off the Belter's greatest "victory" against Earth, Tycho station is operating without any stable leadership. While in the book he dies later in the story, Fred's death happening during the Tycho station terrorist attack better serves the narrative arc that the season looks to follow. Fred, an outsider whose military actions led to thousands of Belter deaths, could not possibly maintain authority on his own against Marco without the support of an influential Belter - and with Dawes having publicly condemned Fred's loyalties, Klaes Ashford dead, and Camina Drummer off leading a pirate fleet, Fred is on his own.įred Johnson's death was inevitable in The Expanseseason 5. The Free Navy Marco represents came out of the OPA, and as a result, many of the Belters working within Tycho have sympathies for Marco and his cause. Fred, conversely, was already struggling to maintain authority over Tycho Station even before tensions with Marco's terrorist faction came to a head. Marco Inaros' plan against Earth was a success, and his speech in "Gaugamela" hints that his influence among the Belt will only grow as the season continues. Many Belter lives were lost in the skirmish, however, and Fred earned the infamous title among the Belters "The Butcher of Anderson Station." Unable to live with what he had done, Fred quit the military and went into self-imposed exile in space - until OPA leader Anderson Dawes recruited him for his cause.įred Johnson's past continued to haunt him during the events of The Expanse, and this history is the reason why his character arc is cut short during season 5. In fact, Fred had earned a heroic reputation from the Inners - Earth and Mars - for leading a successful campaign against a Belter rebellion on Anderson Station. Fred was born on Earth, and before joining the OPA, was a respected member of Earth's United Nations Marine Corps. Fred was not universally accepted by the Belters, however, as he was not originally one of them. The station ostensibly serves as the headquarters of Tycho Manufacturing and Engineering Concern, but covertly (at least in the early seasons), the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA) conducts many of its operations at the station. Fred may officially be the CO of Tycho Station, but holding the role also means heavy involvement in the OPA. Coleman, Frederick "Fred" Lucius Johnson was the Chief of Operations at Tycho Station, a massive Belter-run construction platform.
